godwin > We stopped at the Matte Gatte Restaurant. Turned out that the kitchen didn't open for almost an hour. The waiter seated us and invited us to partake in the buffet (next photo). But Jimmy saw the smoking fireplace and wanted a pizza cooked on the thing!
So we waited, and rested and just enjoyed the moment! I think the waiter felt sorry for us...he brought us a lovely plate of olives. My husband won't eat those things with your mouth!...So I got them all! Yum! There is no comparison between these and the olives in the jar!
godwin > As we were making our way back to the hotel, we passed through this passageway. The radial design behind the lamp got my attention. As Jimmy continued, the beggar at the bottom of these steps got his. (He's holding a squarish shaped object in his hands- you cannot see him, just the object.)
But the gold design is gorgeous!
godwin > It was quite dark by the time we reached the forum. I'm really amazed that this photo of the colosseum came out as well as it did. Look at the people in the lower left corner by the little red light. That will give you an idea of the size of the building.
godwin > You can see that the sun is going down as we walk past the Victor Emmanuel Monument. It was begun in 1885 and inaugurated in 1911 in honor of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of unified Italy. When it was built, it was jokingly called the Wedding Cake because of it's decorative look.
godwin > The artist,Raphael (1483-1520), is buried here. His epigraph reads, "Here lies Raphael. Living, great Nature feared he might outvie her works, and dying, fears she herself may die".
godwin > This is one of the holes in the floor for drainage. With a 9 meter hole in the ceiling, I expect that this is very handy!
Notice the baseball design in the marble!
godwin > The pantheon measures 43.4 meters wide by 43.4 meters tall for good acoustics. Light and air enters throught the opening at the top (an oculus, almost 9 meters across).
godwin > The Pantheon- the glory of Rome- is the city's only architecturally intact monument from classical times.
Agrippa built the Pantheon in 27 BC and dedicated it to the gods of the Julian family. His temple was destroyed by fire in80 AD and was completely redesigned by Hadrian. Further restorations were completed in later centuries.
In 609 AD, Pope Boniface IV, with the permission of the Emperor Phocas, changed the pagan temple into a Christian church.
